How these are worked out
What the numbers mean
- BMI is weight divided by height squared. It is a rough screening number for adults. It ignores muscle, body build and pregnancy, and it is not a diagnosis.
- Pace is your time divided by your distance.
- Water is about 33 ml for every kg of body weight, a common rule of thumb. Heat, activity and health change what you need, and some medical conditions call for fluid limits, so follow your doctor's advice.
- Heart-rate zones use 220 minus your age as maximum heart rate, which can be out by 10 beats or more. Medicines such as beta blockers change heart rate. Stop and get medical help if you have chest pain, faintness or unusual breathlessness.
